University Residence Hall rooms are part of the University's own telephone system. Basic telephone service is included as part of your Housing contract. A feature package is standard with the basic service and other features are options. Calls within the University are free. There is no additional charge to call Champaign-Urbana or the surrounding area.
- Here are some known examples that you may not charge to your number:
- Accepting collect calls.
- Using "Dial Around" services. 10-10-220 for example.
- Third-party billing to a university number.
- Bill telegrams.
- Certain 800 numbers such as those that...
- bill back to the telephone.
- transfer to 900, etc. numbers.
- Ordering telephone company credit cards that bill to the telephone number.
- Restricted types of operator assistance calls.
If these guidelines are not followed, charges will occur and the Illicall Office will rebill the charges plus 15% for special handling to one resident assigned to that telephone number; however, all persons living in a room are responsible for the charges billed to that room telephone number. Additional disciplinary action could be taken.
Telephone service (authorization code and/or dial tone) may be withdrawn at any time for the following reasons:
- Placing harassing telephone calls.
- Misuse of an Illicall number.
- Accepting collect calls.
- Fraudulently denying long-distance charges.
Such matters may result in additional disciplinary action.
Use of portable and/or programmable telephones can occasionally cause billing problems. When this happens, the owner of the telephone will be responsible for ALL CALLS billed to the programmable and/or portable telephone.
University telephone lines, both voice and data are not to be used for commercial or business activities.
An Illicall number allows discounted, long-distance calls from your room telephone, and is available to registered students with "332" telephone numbers. Illicall long distance service is also available to any registered UIUC student.
IF YOU NEED TO PLACE CALLS FROM UNIVERSITY OFFICE TELEPHONES (333, 244, 265), USE THE 265-6565 LOCAL ACCESS METHOD. PENALTIES COULD RESULT IF THE "6" ACCESS METHOD (RESIDENCE HALL DIALING PATTERN) IS USED.
An Illicall number can be obtained by using the ILLICALL Order Pages or by visiting the Illicall Office.
If you have an Illicall number that you no longer wish to use, please cancel the number as soon as possible by notifying the Illicall Office using the web site. Please cancel your Illicall account if you leave mid-year.
YOU ARE FINANCIALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL LONG-DISTANCE CALLS ON YOUR ASSIGNED TELEPHONE NUMBER THAT IS PART OF THE UNIVERSITY TELEPHONE SYSTEM, PLUS ANY OTHER TELEPHONE CHARGES THAT MAY BE INCURRED ON YOUR ASSIGNED TELEPHONE NUMBER.

900 numbers are blocked on the University telephones. To call 900 numbers you must make application to the Illicall Office. WHEN YOU REQUEST THE ABILITY TO CALL 900 NUMBERS YOU ASSUME ALL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE CHARGES. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WILL ILLICALL GIVE CREDIT FOR 900 CALLS MADE WITH YOUR ILLICALL NUMBER AND/OR TELEPHONE.
Telephone credit cards, such as AT&T, MCI, Sprint, etc., plus AT&T Non-Subscriber Cards can be used with the system. If there are questions, please reference the information on your card or call Illicall, 3-9753.
The Federal Communications Commission established the Universal Service Fund in 1997 as a mechanism to provide financial support for telecommunications and computing for schools, libraries, and rural health facilities. Most long -distance carriers began collecting from their customers for the fund right away. However, since the funds inception the University of Illinois (and many other colleges and universities) had questioned whether they are required to pay into the fund. The University began collecting the Universal Service Fund beginning with the January 1999 Illicall details. Please reference the "Rates" section for the current percentage assessed on interstate calls (calls to other states) and international calls.
A request for an Illicall number may be denied or an Illicall number may be deactivated without prior notice when it is deemed to be in the best interests of the University to do so.
To reactivate an Illicall number that has been deactivated, please contact the Illicall Office for information. Reactivation carries a $20.00 charge. (The charge may be waived if the number was deactivated by subscriber request.)
Illicall numbers are deactivated at the end of the school year. If you leave mid-year you need to notify Illicall that you are leaving. If you remain in the halls over the summer, you need to notify Illicall that you want your service to continue service.
